Summertime Walks Thru Cemeteries

There are only a few outdoorsy things I like doing, and walking thru old sections of cemeteries is one of them. (during the day, of course.) The ones with 1750-1800s dates on them.

I often wonder.. what they were like, what did they died of, etc. Around here, in my region of the country, it was mostly disease, old age, and for young women...childbirth.

Out in the Western part of the country, it was a little more. There, you had gunfights, Indian attacks, outlaws on the run, plus the disease and old age, if you were lucky.

But I wonder as I walk around the graves, were the women strict? Yes, life was hard..a day to day survival thing. What did they do? Were they farmers, as most were around here. Were they shopkeepers, owners of boarding houses?

I like history, that whole 19th century of American history just fascinates me. So much went on….industry beginning, new territories opening up, the westward expansion, etc. I sometimes wonder if I was born in the wrong century.

I also wonder... if somebody from that era were to “come back” in this time, for like a week...would they survive all the changes we made after the 19th century. Or would they be in awe and wonder at what all we’ve done.

Until next time.... Reply via email
